JOHN AND MABLE RINGLING MUSEUM OF ART
Sumptuous museum in Sarasota with quality exhibits suggesting a free and very relaxing walking tour.
Ranked among the top 20 American museums, this set of three museums stands in a sumptuous park, the Bayfront Gardens, filled with flowers that embellish the paths lined with benches, banyans, and sausage trees. Beyond the quality of the exhibitions, the building itself is sumptuous.
The Ringling Museum and its exceptional collection were bequeathed by John Ringling (1866-1936) to the people of Sarasota, a city for which he worked for many years. A street and a bridge bear his name. In all, nearly 27 hectares, housing a rare concentration of works of art and architecture, gathered by his wife Mable (1875-1929) and himself during their marriage.
The Museum of Art exhibits over 600 paintings, sculptures and decorative arts objects. To house their valuable collection, the Ringlings built this museum in 1929. They brought together some of the most famous and rare pieces in the United States, including works by Rubens, Poussin, Velasquez, Guercino, as well as paintings by other great artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The collection, enriched with Cypriot and other period pieces - including Chinese ceramics - includes more than 16,000 objects.
The Tibbals Learning Center, named after its creator, displays the largest miniature circus in the world under a big top. An exceptional work. The visit is accompanied by the sounds of the life of a circus. Not to be missed under any circumstances!
