If you're in Tampa in late January/early February, don't miss the Gasparilla Festival, which has been held downtown since... 1904 ! It honors the legendary pirate Jose Gaspar, nicknamed Gasparilla, (1756-1821 or so). On this day, the entire city dresses up as pirates, hundreds of floats parade along a 7 kilometer circuit and people in costume send necklaces with multicolored beads into the crowd. In Tampa Bay, ships are also paraded on the water. It is the third largest parade in the United States.
