SOLIO GAME RESERVE
Private ranch constituting a beautiful animal reserve of 76 km², where to observe animals like zebras, giraffes, buffalos
This huge private ranch is in fact a beautiful 76 km² game reserve, where giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, zebras and gazelles can easily be observed amid beautiful scenery. There are no elephants here, which has the advantage of protecting the splendidyellow-fever acacia trees that characterize Solio's vegetation. But the big attraction of this private sanctuary is the rhinos. Or rather rhinos, as many have been enjoying this haven of peace, entirely dedicated to them, since 1970. Thanks to a conservation program, they breed and grow up here in complete safety (the reserve is guarded and fenced in its entirety), before sometimes being transferred to the country's various parks (Nakuru, Ol Pejeta, Lewa, in particular). The reserve is located some 20 km north of Nyeri, just outside Naro Moru, on the road to Nyahuhuru. A sign indicates the entrance. Reservations can be made from Nairobi through travel agencies or at Nyeri's two major hotels. The Rhino Watch Safari Lodge and the splendid Solio Lodge (inside the reserve) are ideal bases for an idyllic stay. Alternatively, you can drive right up to the ranch gate in your own vehicle (caution: 4X4 is compulsory). You can either pick up a guide at the entrance, or let your instincts guide you (the ranch is small and a detailed map is available on site).
