Museum located in Lamu which houses the island's library holding one of the best collections of Swahili poetry in Kenya
It is the only imposing building in the city. It was built between 1813 and 1821 on the initiative of the Sultan of Pate, and between 1910 and 1984 it was used as a prison. Efforts to transform the fort into a museum were made with technical and financial assistance from the Swedish International Development Agency. It now houses the island's library, which holds one of the best collections of Swahili poetry in Kenya as well as reference works on Lamu. Admission is free with a ticket to the Lamu Museum.
