Museum located in Lamu which houses the island's library holding one of the best collections of Swahili poetry in Kenya
This is the town's only imposing building. Built between 1813 and 1821 on the initiative of the Sultan of Pate, it was used as a prison between 1910 and 1984. Efforts to transform the fort into a museum were carried out with technical and financial assistance from the Swedish International Development Agency. It now houses the island's library, which holds one of the best collections of Swahili poetry in Kenya, as well as reference works on Lamu. Admission is free with a ticket to the Lamu Museum.
