Budgets vary enormously, from hostels to luxury hotels in Rio's southern zone. Prices range from 20 to 100 euros per night per person, from a bed in a dormitory to a room in a well-stocked pousada. For a night at the Copacabana palace, you'll have to pay over 500 euros for a room. Airbnb has now extended its network to Rio, and numerous rentals are on offer. Card payment is available in almost all establishments. In Rio, it is strongly recommended to stay in the South zone, which is safer in terms of security. The Oeste zone, far from points of interest, is of only relative interest for accommodation.

During Carnival, New Year's Eve and Easter in places like Ouro Preto, prices can be multiplied by 2, 3 or 4. What's more, during these periods, customers are often subject to a "pacote", i.e. the obligation to book a certain minimum number of nights.

To be booked

Depending on the period (weekends, Brazilian vacations, Carnival), prices can vary considerably for the same services, and above all, accommodation can be difficult or even impossible to find if you haven't booked very far in advance. It's important to bear these realities in mind, and anticipate any bookings you may make to avoid unpleasant surprises.

For food lovers

Café da manhã" (breakfast in Brazil) is generally included in the price of an overnight stay. Depending on the establishment, the quality of breakfast varies considerably. In some places, like the Hotel Paranaguá for example, it's the first gastronomic encounter of the day.

Smokers

Brazilian legislation, as in many other countries, prohibits smoking in bedrooms and public places. It's better for the lungs!

Tourist traps

Of course, you'll want to avoid the touts (who are few and far between in Rio and Minas), and you'll want to make sure of the quality of the location by doing some basic research beforehand.
