KIZIMKAZI MOSQUE
This mosque built in 1107, restored in the 13th century, still standing and intact, is one of the oldest in the region.
Built around 1107 and restored in the 13th century, this mosque is one of the oldest in the region still standing and is miraculously intact. Its inscriptions celebrate the sheikh who built it. Kizi is a Persian name, and mkazi means "settler" in a way. Visible only from the outside at prayer time, one can have the privilege of visiting it if the imam is around, and for women if one is properly dressed. The 17th century ruins are also interesting: they include several tombs.
