Mosque on the historic site of Sheikh el-Refaï's zawiya, home to numerous tombs, including those of King Fouad.
Of the two mosques in the centre of Salah el-Din Square, this is not the most interesting. Built in 1819, and completed in 1912, it is located on the historic site of Sheikh el-Refai's zawiya, built in 1122. The construction of the mosque has been somewhat chaotic, interrupted many times and left abandoned for a quarter of a century. It houses many tombs, including those of King Fouad of Egypt, his mother and Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran. Rich "tarkîba" mark their graves under the dome.
