AMR MOSQUE
Africa's first mosque is the fourth largest in the world, and is invested with a high symbolic value.
In the eyes of Islam, the Amr mosque is invested with high symbolic value. This is the first mosque in Africa and the fourth in the world! Nothing remains of the original edifice built in 642 by General Amr. The present structure dates from the restoration of 1798 (only the columns are derived from ancient elements). Egypt was Coptic under Byzantine rule. General Amr built the first mosque in Africa, and at the same time freed the Coptic faithful from persecution. His Foustat camp (the tents) became the country's capital.
