AL-AZHAR MOSQUE
An ancient Fatimid mosque with a period main entrance door, a prayer room still decorated in stucco...
It is the oldest of the Fatimid mosques in the city, built in 971 by General Gaouhar. The main entrance door is from the 18th century. It opens onto a courtyard giving access to two madrassas of the 13th and 14th centuries. Only the main courtyard has preserved the dimensions of the first Fatimid mosque of al-Azhar. The prayer hall has preserved its 12th-century stucco decorations. The qibla wall (towards Mecca) and the mihrab niche are of more recent date. The minarets are of Mamluk construction.
