EL-FAKAHANI MOSQUE
A pretty mosque with two beautifully carved original doors and 12 marble columns.
Taking Muezz el-Din Allah Street, one can see on its left a beautiful mosque dating from 1735, erected on the ruins of a Fatimid mosque built in 1148 by Khalif al-Zafirdont. It has also preserved two of the original, beautifully carved doors. El-Fakahani Mosque, 'the Mosque of the Fruit Merchants', was built by the Janissary Officer Ahmad Katkhuda al-Kharbutl in an Ottoman structure, opening onto a courtyard above the shops. The 12 marble columns that support it give it its full presence.
