SULTAN AL-MUAYYAD MOSQUE
A mosque with a splendid mihrab, a courtyard transformed into a garden and a minbar embellished with mother-of-pearl and ivory.
This mosque was erected between 1415 and 1420 by Sultan el-Mouayyed. It leans against the city's Fatimid enclosure, its minarets rise up from the two towers of the gate. The mosque is closed by a heavy bronze door, which was borrowed from the madrasah of Sultan Hassan. The courtyard of the mosque has been transformed into a garden. There is a splendid mihrab (prayer niche) with marble inlays, and the minbar is decorated with mother-of-pearl and ivory.
