EL-AQMAR MOSQUE
Superb Fatimid mosque with remarkable Shiite symbols above the main door.
This superb Fatimid-period mosque was completed in 1125, where a Coptic church stood. The Shiite symbols above the main door are remarkable. Passing through this door, on the left, one admires a vase representing the Prophet Muhammad containing two flowers, one being for Hassan and the other for Hussein; a five-pointed star with these representing the Prophet Muhammad, Ali, Hussein, Hassan and Fatma; and finally seven niches for the six major prophets, the expected seventh being Ali.
