SHEIKH MOSQUE
Go there and contact
A remarkable cruciform-shaped mosque housing a vestibule, qibla and minbar preceded by an attractive carved stone portico.
The mosque was built between 1349 and 1355 by Prince Sheikhou, who obtained greater powers than those of his master, Sultan Hassan. The cruciform shape of the mosque is remarkable. One enters through a vestibule in which black glass panes have been inlaid into the walls, serving to ward off evil spirits from the place dedicated to prayer. The qibla, which was not oriented exactly towards Mecca, is formed by a diagonal wall. The minbar (pulpit), which is always made of wood, is preceded by a beautifully carved stone portico.
