KHANQAH SHEIKHOU

An ancient khanqah-madrasa from the Mamluk period, used to welcome pilgrims on their way to Mecca.
Six years after building his mosque, Prince Sheikhou decided to erect a khankaq right across the street. The two buildings share many architectural elements, forming a recognizable whole. It is the oldest known khanqah-madrasa from the Mamluk period. The inscription on the minaret repeats a passage from the Qur'an dedicated to pilgrimage, so it seems that this khanqah was used to accommodate pilgrims on their way to Mecca. Prince Sheikhou will be buried here after being assassinated with a sword.
