TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in basalt, a stone used by the ancient Egyptians for their funerary monuments.
It was in 1974 that President Sadat wanted to erect this pyramidal monument in memory of the soldiers who died for Egypt during the 1973 war against Israel. Inaugurated in 1975, it was in front of this memorial that Anwar Sadat was assassinated on 6 October 1981. The monument is made of concrete engraved with 71 names of soldiers taken at random, while the tomb of the unknown soldier is made of basalt, a hard stone that the Egyptians already used during antiquity for their funeral monuments.
