GAWHARA PALACE
Palace to the southwest of the esplanade, featuring a few rooms, original furniture and gold inscriptions on the walls.
Located southwest of the esplanade. Also known as the Palace of Jewels, the Gawhara Palace - named after Gawhara Hanem, Mohamed Ali's last wife - was built in 1814 and served as Mohamed Ali's personal residence. The tour reveals a number of rooms, including the astonishing Watch Hall, where the decoration of the walls is based on the shape of a watch. You can also admire the original furniture and the gold inscriptions adorning the palace walls. Its Ottoman-influenced architecture required the work of craftsmen from several countries.
