Today's Cairo University was built between 1935 and 1937 by architect Eric George Newnum. Its two-column façade opens onto a large amphitheatre where the American President Obama gave his speech in Cairo in 2009, in favour of closer ties with the Arab countries. The University currently has about 155,000 students in 20 faculties. It has the great honor of having three Nobel laureates among its graduates and is one of the 50 largest higher education institutions in the world by enrolment.
