EMPAIN BARON'S PALACE
Hindu-style palace designed by architect Alexandre Marcel between 1907 and 1910 and acquired by the Egyptian state in 2005.
This Hindu-style palace contrasts with the neo-Moorish style typical of the great buildings that Baron Empain had erected in Heliopolis. He entrusted the realization of his villa to the architect Alexandre Marcel, who built it from 1907 to 1910. The baron wanted the sun to enter his room all day long. To achieve this miracle, a circular room was designed for him... which turned on itself to follow the sun's exposure (with the help of workmen milling under the floor!). The palace was acquired by the Egyptian state in 2005.
