The Haret el-Moubayyadin Ottoman gate is one of the few remaining Ottoman gates in historic Cairo.
One of the few remaining Ottoman gates in historic Cairo. They corresponded to administrative divisions of the city, the "haras", which were headed by a "sheikh el-hara", a sort of notable and justice of the peace who was responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing social order. However, there was great solidarity between the inhabitants of the same hara. At night, these doors were closed, only to reopen at dawn.
