MADRASSA AND MARISTAN MANSUR QALAOUN
A superb complex housing a mosque with a square courtyard and four iwans, as well as a mausoleum and a maristan.
It was in 1284 that Sultan Mansur el-Qalaoun had a superb complex built comprising a madrasah, a mosque, a mausoleum and a maristan (hospital). The layout of the mosque space is classical: square courtyard, four iwans. The particularity of the façade is that the portal of the madrassa is in the purest Gothic style: it was dismantled by the victor Qalaoun during a battle at St John of Acre and reassembled in Cairo. The battlements of the building are superb.
