BAB ZOUEILA
Door with two minarets to the el-Mouayyed mosque, accessible from the top, with a breathtaking view of Cairo.
Like the el-Nasr and el-Foutouh gates, Bab Zoueila was erected in 1092 to open the defensive walls of the Fatimid city of Cairo to the south. It is above its crenellations that the heads of the tortured were exposed at the end of spears. One can access the ramparts of the Zoueila Gate and climb to the top of the two minarets of the el-Mouayyed Mosque, from where the view of Cairo is breathtaking. During Ramadan, it is on Darb el-Ahmar Street, in front of the Bab Zouila, that many decorative lanterns, made for the holy month, are displayed.
