BAB EL-FOUTOUH
Recognizable by its two rounded towers, long arch and carefully maintained military architecture.
Built in 1087, Bab el-Foutouh (Gate of Conquests) is recognizable by its two rounded towers. A long vault then leads inside the walls of Fatimid Cairo. The present floor is 5 m above the original floor. The entrance is covered with a dome and the towers are covered with ribbed vaults, with a carved medallion in the centre representing a ram's head. Its military architecture is particularly well cared for. It was through this gate that the caravans of pilgrims returning from Mecca entered the city.
