BAB EL-AZAB
Gate flanked by two massive towers, in the style of Bab el-Foutouh, protecting the original entrance to the Citadel.
Bab al-Azab protected the original entrance to the Citadel, and was rebuilt in 1754 with today's wooden and brass gates. It is flanked by two massive towers in the style of Bab el-Foutouh. It leads to the citadel. It is famous for having been the scene of a bloody scene in the early 19th century. It was here that Mohammed Ali trapped the Mamelukes he had invited to a friendly reception, and had them slaughtered in this narrow passage once the festivities were over. It is closed and can be seen from the outside.
