QASR EL-NIL BRIDGE
Cairo's first modern bridge, featuring four bronze lions designed by Jacquemard and placed on higher pedestals.
The first bridge with an iron structure was delivered in 1872 by the French company Fives-Lille. It was the first modern bridge in Cairo and connected Gezira to the new district that Khedive Ismaïl was beginning to build. The present bridge was inaugurated by King Fouad in 1933 as indicated by the plaque on one of the pillars. The four bronze lions made by Jacquemard were delivered for the first bridge; they were then placed on higher pedestals than they are now. It is a place where young people like to stroll in the evening.
