Dachour's most spectacular monument, with its taut silhouette, is Egypt's first smooth-faced pyramid. It is now open to visitors, with staircases leading up to the burial chamber. In fact, the architects of Snefru's time (Old Kingdom) modified the plans during construction, which for once were revised downwards. Starting from a broad base, the monument's inclination was accentuated and its height reduced, saving a great deal of material. Its burial chamber was never used.
