Coptic Orthodox monastery in the Nitrie desert, with a convent retaining its picturesque medieval appearance.
This Orthodox Coptic monastery is located in the desert of Nitria. The monks who live in this monastery, the northernmost of the four, follow the strictest discipline. As a result, it is sometimes difficult to visit it. It has retained a very picturesque medieval appearance. Following the attacks of the Berbers and Bedouins, Pope Shenouda I of Alexandria (859-880) had walls built around the monasteries, eleven metres high and two metres wide.
