An important, restored ancient Coptic Orthodox monastery housing the tomb of the holy anchorite in Middle Egypt.
Deir Anba Bishoi is an important Coptic Orthodox monastery. It is also known as Saint Bishoy's Monastery. It was founded in the 4th century (restored in the 14th century). It is one of the world's first and oldest monasteries. Bishoï is a deformation of the Coptic word Pshoï, meaning "high" or "supreme". Here lies the tomb of the holy anchorite, born in the Delta region and who died in 317 in Antinöé, Middle Egypt, where he had retired. His remains remained in Antinoe until 841, when Josef I moved them to the monastery.
