PULA FORTRESS, HISTORICAL AND MARITIME MUSEUM
Water tower and barracks with a museographic part illustrating the historical, military and maritime past of Pula.
In addition to the amphitheater, in Roman times there was also a large theater (Rimsko kazalište) for the public, which became a fort(kastel) in the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, it was dismantled by the Venetians, who salvaged the stones for a future large fortress. The large water reservoir - recently restored - was built under Habsburg rule. With the construction of the arsenal at the end of the 19th century, Pula became the home port of the Austro-Hungarian navy. In 1861, an imperial hospital was opened here. The water tower and barracks now house the museum section. Weapons, territorial maps, everyday objects, costumes and photographs illustrate the historical, military and maritime past of Pula, the capital of Istria.
Since 2005, old apothecary's items have been on display, recalling the history of pharmacy in Istria and Croatia. Today, exhibitions are refocused on multimedia, to tell the story of more recent military history, the work of archaeologists and art restorers.
The tour of the ramparts offers a cavalier view of the port city and as far as the shipyards.
The Zerostrasse tunnels (ticketing not included). Since 2011, the PPMI has also been operating these underground passages built during the Austro-Hungarian period. A network of underground galleries under concrete vaults, some 400 m long, leads right into the city center, behind Forum Square.
