BASILIQUE SAINTE-MARIE
Well-preserved ruins of the original church in Veli Brijuni preserving the semicircular arch of the nave.
The ruins of the original church are well preserved. Its construction dates back to the 5th or 6th century. We can admire the semicircular arch of the nave and imagine the capacity of this public place of worship where the first Christians gathered. In the early Middle Ages, the basilica was renovated, before falling into the hands of the Knights Templar in the 13th century, but the large religious building was abandoned from 1312 onwards, and the church was never rebuilt. Nearby was a cemetery for the island community.
