FORTERESSE SAINT-NICOLAS
A fortress on the islet of Ljuljevac, representing a unique example of Venetian Renaissance military architecture.
On the islet of Ljuljevac, at the entrance to the Saint-Antoine canal, where the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Nicolas once stood, the fortress represents a unique example of Venetian Renaissance military architecture. Based on plans by Gian Girolamo San Micheli, construction began in 1540 after the river city of Skradin fell under Ottoman domination. Its original shape, covering the entire island, also adds to its exceptional value. In 2017, it was therefore included on Unesco's World Heritage List.
