FORTERESSE DE KLIS
A beautifully restored fortress steeped in history, the setting forthe Game of Thrones series.
8 km southwest of Dugopolje and 12 km from Split, on a plateau formed by the steep cliffs of a gorge between Kozjak and Mosor, the fortress of Klis always keeps one eye on the sea and the other on the land of Zagora. Historically, in the IInd century BC, the site was really invested by the settlers. the site was really invested by the Illyrians, who built there a first fort. In the 9th century, the first Croatian kings increased the fortifications, created housing and military garrisons. In the Middle Ages, the fortress was successively conquered by conquering peoples, Goths, Avars, Venetians, Ottomans (1537), then the Serenissima again until the French under Napoleon for a short period in the nineteenth century before the Austrian monarchy of the Habsburgs took over until the First World War.
Beautifully restored, it bears the traces of these different occupations, which constitutes an important military heritage from the medieval period to modern times. The latest event in the history of the fortress is that it was used as a setting for the Game of Thrones series(The Iron Throne) to set up the imaginary city of Meeren. It still attracts fans of the series, who often come from Split to visit it. Certainly, the majesty of the natural site, the impressive system of ramparts, historical buildings without contemporary interference could not but seduce the HBO production. Also worth seeing: the interpretation center at Mejdan Square and the ethno-agro park Stella Croatica.
