The theater was built in 1783. It is world-famous for having hosted the first performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni in 1787. It was also here in 1831 that Czech composer František Škroup's song Kde domov můj ("Where is my fatherland (my home)?") first rang out, the first verse of which became Czechoslovakia's national anthem in 1918. In 1993, it was once again adopted as the Czech national anthem.
