MUSÉE D'HISTOIRE MILITAIRE
Everything you've ever wanted to know about Czech military history can be found in this museum, which will have taken years to refurbish before presenting its new scenography in 2024. In the old, very Soviet building next to the equestrian statue of Jan Žižak, the entire history of the Czech Republic unfolds on several levels, from the 1st clashes between Celtic tribes to the soldiers engaged in Afghanistan at the beginning of the 21st century. This is often an opportunity to revisit forgotten history lessons, such as the Battle of White Mountain, the Battle of Austerlitz and the Battle of Chlumec. Each time, models, uniforms, paintings and other documents make the exhibition as immersive as possible. And it's impossible to leave the 19th century behind without visiting the museum's treasure trove: a breathtaking collection of prestigious weapons: rifles, swords, spears and pistols of all styles and periods, which belonged to the nobility before the establishment of the Republic. Warning: the rest of the tour is not for the faint-hearted: an immersive experience in the heart of a WWI trench precedes a long exhibition devoted to WWII, with particular emphasis on the German occupation, Operation Anthropoid (the assassination of Heydrich by Czech and Slovak paratroopers) and the extermination of Bohemia's Jews. A fascinating tour that will keep you busy for a good two hours!
