LAPIDARIUM (LAPIDARIUM)
An essential exhibition for sculpture lovers. There are Czech works from the 11th to the 19th centuries and exceptional elements, such as the original column that once stood in the centre of Place de la Vieille-Ville or the original statues of the Charles Bridge, worn down by time.
The museum will house in its permanent collection, in a specially built room, the twenty majestic paintings of Alfons Mucha's Slavic Epic, a major work that the artist painted relentlessly from 1910 to 1928. These allegorical paintings trace the history of the Slavic people from the 3rd to the 20th century through ten important events of their past, from Serbia to Moscow, via an imposing "Hussite" triptych or an evocation of King Přemysl Ottokar II of Bohemia.
Prague is the only place in the world where Mucha wanted his masterpieces to be exhibited: he indicated in his will that the paintings would end up in Prague on the sole condition that a building adapted to their splendour would be erected. After many years of procrastination and the search for a suitable building, the municipality of Prague has finally decided to start work on the creation of a new building at the lapidarium, the dimensions of which will provide a prime setting for Mucha's work. The Slavic Epic, during its exhibition in Japan in 2017, attracted 660,000 people! The only unknown that remains is the date of delivery of the building itself, and the date on which the works will be installed.
