Venetian fortress with the Museum of the Navy, remains of cannons and cells.
A Venetian building, the Firkas Fortress provides a magnificent view of the rest of the port. It retains the name given to it by the Ottomans: firka means barrack in Turkish. Impressive, the headquarters of the armed forces, it jealously guarded the entrance to the port before being transformed into an ammunition store and barracks for soldiers. The remains of cannons, surrounding walls and cells can be seen here. On December1, 1913, the Greek flag was hoisted there to mark the union of Crete with Greece. Today it houses the Naval Museum.
