Byzantine collection with objects from archaeological excavations and donations relating to the history of South Crete.
Nestling behind the Firkas Fortress, south of the city, in the Venetian Monastery of San Salvatore, established by Franciscan monks from the 15th to 17th centuries, are collections of artwork from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods. The permanent exhibition includes objects found during archaeological excavations as well as donations. These are pieces representative of the historical development of Southern Crete: mosaics, funerary inscriptions, paintings and icons, sculptures, ceramics, coins...
