HOUSE MUSEUM OF ELEFTHERIOS VENIZELOS
House of Eleftherios Venizelos restored as a museum to relate his life and political career.
The Eleftherios Venizelos Foundation has completely restored the house of the great Cretan politician as a museum and research centre. Its main objective is to promote, both at national and European level, research and studies on the life and political role of El. Venizelos, but also those concerning modern Greek history. The foundation, located in the bourgeois district of Halepa, is housed in the family manor house. It was, in fact, Venizelos' father who had this villa built in the early 1870s, back from exile on the island of Syros. Venizelos' immense political and diplomatic career is detailed in this fascinating museum for those interested in the history of modern Greece. One discovers the politician of course, but also the man of letters and the father of the family. All this is retraced in the family home, restored, where you can admire the original furniture and part of the bookshop that survived the German bombing during the Second World War. During the German occupation, the army requisitioned the Venizelos' villa to be used as headquarters and a bar: one of the rooms on the ground floor still bears the traces of the grotesque frescoes that dressed the pub. With the exception of this occupation, the house has always remained the property of the Venizelos, until it was bequeathed to the State.
