MONASTERY OF THE 99 SAINTS
Monastery founded in the cave of Charakas where preaching monks took refuge.
A superb place. At the beginning of the 14th century, Saint John the Hermit left Egypt with 36 other monks to preach the good word in the Middle East. There they met up with 99 other monks and set sail for Cyprus. They were shipwrecked near Gavdos, where they stayed for 24 days, forgetting to wake Saint John the Hermit when they left. He rejoined Crete and the other saints, who, after landing near Paleochora, initially took refuge in the Charakas grotto. It was from this cave that the monastery was built.
