Gorges of Imbros to Amoudari, not very frequented, with practicable paths.
The Imbros Gorge, with a height difference of 650 m, is a little east of the Samaria Gorge and is just as spectacular as the Samaria Gorge, with the added advantage that it is little frequented and does not present any particular difficulties. The gorge meanders for about 8 km. The paths are very passable, even for children, and there is no need for special equipment. The walk lasts between 1h30 and 3 hours. At the tightest point, there are less than two meters between 300 m high vertical walls! The trail is well marked and starts at the southern exit of Imbros, at 750 meters above sea level, in the direction of Hora Sfakion and Komytades. In spring, the path is bordered by the budding orchids, in large numbers. It follows the river bed amidst cypress, almond and oleander trees, while skirting rock cascades and numerous caves. You can also cross the gorges from Komitades. At the side of the road, many signs invite you to do so. But it goes up, instead of down. From the end of the gorge to Hora Skafion, it is a short hour's walk. It's spectacular and, what's more, it's open all year round. In winter, however, beware, as rain could make the hike difficult. Legend has it that the gorge was named after two brothers who were banished from the Turkish island of Imbros. It is also interesting to know that it was by following the path of these gorges that many British soldiers were evacuated in 1941, when Nazi Germany won the Battle of Crete.
