Chapels in beautiful places in Gavdos, one of which was an archbishopric.
There are sixteen on the island. They are not particularly remarkable, but most of them are located in beautiful places. The one of Agios Giorgos, not far from Lavrakas, is on the site of an ancient Roman village, with a spring, basins and pipes dug into the rock. The chapel dedicated to St. John, dating from the year 900, located in Agios Giannis (St. John), attests to the importance of this place; it was an archbishopric during the Early Christian period, since the village had more than 8,000 inhabitants.
