TURKISH CASTLE RUINS
Ruins of the Turkish castle with a panoramic view overlooking the village and the bay of Agia Roumeli.
The ruins of this Ottoman fortress dominate the village and the bay at an altitude of about 400m. You reach the fortress (Koulés) by taking the path that starts from the Byzantine church Panagia (dedicated to the Virgin Mary). There are only a few surrounding walls of one or two meters high, but from here the view of the village, the Libyan Sea and the islands of Gavdos and Gavdopoula is superb. The ochre colour of the ashlar on the blue sea background gives an admirable ensemble. It is worth coming here for a picnic at less than an hour's walk.
