KARA MUSSA PASHA MOSQUE
Mosque surrounded by a beautiful small garden, which owes its name to the commander of the Ottoman fleet Kara Mussa Pasha.
This mosque most likely owes its name to the commander of the Ottoman fleet, Kara Mussa Pasha, who in 1646 attacked and subsequently occupied Rethymno. It is surrounded by a beautiful small garden. Its exterior architecture is particularly interesting: it reflects the dual history of the place. Originally built by the Venetians, the monastery of Saint Barbara was transformed into a mosque by the Ottomans: the Renaissance ogives of the facade recall the Venetian occupant while the domes are a legacy of the Turkish period of the pasha.
