GERANI CAVE
The Gerani cave covers an area of 1200 and consists of six large rooms covered with stalagmites.
The Gerani Cave was discovered by chance in 1969, during public works. It covers an area of 1,200m2 and consists of six large rooms covered with stalagmites. Bones and tools dating back to the Neolithic period have been found there. The remains of about 100 deer belonging to an endemic species, dating from the end of the Pleistocene, have also been found there. The human skeletons probably belonged to individuals caught in the cave by an earthquake. Most of these discoveries are exhibited in the museum of Réthymnon.
