This cave is a little more than 12 km southeast of Panormos, in the hinterland. In antiquity, in this cave, inhabited since the Palaeolithic, the legendary hero of Crete, Talos, and Hermes Talaios were venerated. It was here that, on October 3, 1823, Ottoman armed groups murdered nearly 400 people. The Cretans, mainly women and children, had taken refuge in the cave and were smoked and asphyxiated by the occupants. One can enter this symbolic cave where a monument has been erected in memory of these victims.
