SKOUPIDOFAGOS / ΕΚΟΥΠΙΔΟΦΑΓΟΣ
You probably went next to this gigantic metal tube and horribly ugly straight out of land like a huge chimney. Guess what it is? Well, it's no more or less than a trash (skoupi = dust, fagos = waste). Indeed, Greece was accepted in the EU under certain conditions, and in particular that of putting the environment and its waste in order. That's why, in Crete, an engineer, unknown to date, had the right idea of creating not a pit in the earth because the soil is protected by the Greek ministry for archaeological reasons, but a huge container to the sky. A powerful compressor sends garbage to the top of the tower, which is supposed to disperse odours. This idea cost the bagatelle of EUR 120 000 to the municipality.
Of course, all this could have stopped and everyone would have been happy with its usefulness. But the engineer in question wanted to go further and perfect his idea by including an identification video camera and a loudspeaker to be heard in order to thank the inhabitants for their participation. So that this waste waste trash robot scares the inhabitants with its inhumane, avant-garde voice. The people were fleeing, surprised, shaking their nose so much it felt bad, and finally they used only two or three months to abandon it by little. This is a true story, told by several Cretan people in different cities. The photos illustrating my story were taken at Matala (green tower at the entrance to the village on the left) and in its neighbour Agia Galini (the visible brick tower at the port at the disposal point near Point Info). These strange machines are illuminated at night as curiosity except that there is no explanation to mention. In Matala, it goes straight because the village has a creative mind, especially since this "monster" remains outside the center. But in Agia Galini it is in the harbor, a highly tourist place!
