MONTON VIRGIN
From the A75 motorway, its silhouette is easy to spot. The stopover is worth a detour, if only for the superb panoramic view of the Auvergne mountains from the top of this hill. The view sweeps across the landscape from the Monts du Forez to Sancy. Built in 1869 by Aristide Belloc in Beaucaire stone, the statue of the Virgin rises to 21 metres. This makes it one of the highest statues in France. Symbolically, it offers the whole earth to the child Jesus and crushes the snake, symbol of evil. Its particularity: Notre-Dame de Monton remains the property of the inhabitants of the village of Monton. At its feet, a cannon, a remnant of the First World War. It is a German howitzer, founded in 1900 in Spandau, Berlin district. Its weight is 4.9 tons. On site, an orientation table helps you to find your way around the landscape and a "historial" for the most curious provides some additional information. For the most courageous, a path leads from the village to the hillock where the Virgin dominates. A pilgrimage takes place every year on the last weekend of August, during a torchlight procession and a Marian vigil.
