An atypical visit with a special atmosphere, which entrance is through a dark corridor with theatrical allure in Amsterdam

The Torture Museum, located near the Rokin and close to the floating flower market, offers an atypical experience that plunges visitors into the world of human cruelty and its evolution throughout history. Often considered one of the most unusual museums in the world, it stands out for its unique atmosphere. The entrance is via a theatrical corridor, creating a striking contrast with the city's bustling shopping streets. This corridor leads to several small, carefully decorated rooms, with stone walls and exposed beams, carefully lit to accentuate the gloomy effect. In each room, various instruments of torture are on display (some forty in all), accompanied by historical explanations. The museum takes an educational approach to the subject, far from the expected voyeurism, highlighting the historical facts behind these objects.

The collection, rich and well-documented, is the result of several years' in-depth research by its creator, an enthusiast of the subject. Thematic exhibitions are regularly organized, dealing with social issues such as the death penalty. The tour, which lasts between 20 and 40 minutes, is informative without being overly long, offering a unique perspective on a delicate subject that is unfortunately still topical... A fact rare enough to be highlighted: explanations are available in eight languages, including French. Guided tours can be arranged for groups on request.

A éviter.
