The Alkantara Festival is a biennial event dedicated to the contemporary performing arts, in particular dance, theater and performance. Created in 1993 by choreographer Mónica Lapa under the name "Danças na Cidade", the festival has since evolved to include a wider variety of artistic disciplines, and was renamed Alkantara Festival in 2006. Today, it is one of Portugal's most important festivals for the contemporary arts. It's also an opportunity to discover emblematic venues such as the Teatro São Luiz and the Centro Cultural de Belém.
