Carnival is also celebrated in Lisbon! Find your disguise and go celebrate this moment when appearances disappear.
It's different from the Rio carnival, but no less interesting for that. In Lisbon, people also celebrate before entering the lean period of Lent. In fact, in ancient times, this festival was called Entrudo (from the Latin introitu, to enter). The two major festivities close to Lisbon are Sesimbra and Loures (on the outskirts of Lisbon). Sesimbra is the carnival closest to Brazil, with samba schools on parade. In Loures, it's a parade of floats and extras (no fewer than 1,200 people).
