OCEANÁRIO DE LISBOA
Discover the largest aquarium in Europe with a huge central pool and all the ecosystems recreated in several spaces.
A must-see if you enjoy observing underwater life. The Oceanário de Lisboa is one of the world's largest indoor aquariums, designed by American architect Peter Chermayeff. More than an aquarium, it's an attempt to recreate ecosystems. Surrounding an enormous 6,000m3 central tank, four smaller areas invite you to visit the coasts of Antarctica, the Indian Ocean, the North Pacific and the Atlantic (Ah, the Azores!). It's all here: flora, temperature, fish and birds or animals. The penguins snub us and the otters put on a show! The tour winds its way around the central pool (completely glazed), which serves as a guiding thread as it gradually descends. Inside, you can observe sharks, rays (some of which are truly impressive), schools of dorados, tropical fish, a giant octopus (a big hit) and much more. All this little world cohabits together and comes to taunt us right up close to the glass. It's magical, especially if you visit on a reasonably busy day. As we wander around this giant aquarium, we're told all about the seabed and its inhabitants. There are also a number of interactive games for children. There's a lot of work being done to raise awareness of the need to protect the oceans. Weekends are not the best time to enjoy the new sensations, especially the temporary exhibitions.
